Comments by the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, calling for the exclusion of gay people from Catholic seminaries have raised serious concerns about stigma, discrimination, and the safety of LGBTQ persons within religious institutions in West Africa. The Minority in Parliament, led by NPP Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy and political double standards over its handling of the proposed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ bill, as well as a recent controversy surrounding a Senior High School teachers’ manual. “Another Week, Another Scapegoat”: Afenyo-Markin’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Rhetoric Undermines Ghana’s Democratic Priorities “Another Week, Another Scapegoat”: Afenyo-Markin’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Rhetoric Undermines Ghana’s Democratic Priorities An Open Letter to Servaa Amihere ESQ @serwaaamihere Today's Ghanaian newspaper front pages prominently feature the NaCCA teacher manual controversy, with the Daily Graphic headlining "Ministry draws line on gender – Recognises only male, female to quell SHS curriculum controversy," highlighting Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu's directive for clarity on biological sex. Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, directed the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to ensure there is no ambiguity in the biological definition of gender within Ghana’s educational curriculum. The Minority Caucus in Ghana's Parliament, now comprising members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), held a press conference on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the 2025 Senior High School (SHS) Physical Education and Health Teacher Manual produced by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA). #FactCheck: The claim circulating online that Mahama and the NDC “legalised LGBTQ in schools” is misinformation. According to NaCCA, no LGBTQ content exists in the national curriculum, and the pages being spread on TikTok were taken from an optional SRH Teacher Manual — not the curriculum itself. The manual has since been revised and the older printed version withdrawn.
