⚠️ Warning: Certain areas in Ghana have been identified as hotspots for blackmailers and organised groups targeting men who have sex with men (MSMs), gay men, bisexual men, transgender women, and other members of the LGBTQI+ community.
How They Operate
These perpetrators — members of organised criminal anti-gay networks — commonly target victims through popular platforms such as Grindr, HeeSay (formerly Blued), TikTok, Facebook, Tinder, Snapchat, Adam4Adam, Planet Romeo, Jodel, Tondo, as well as some LGBTQI+ WhatsApp and Telegram groups which have been infiltrated by these individuals. They lure individuals to predetermined locations where the victims are robbed, physically assaulted, stripped naked, filmed without consent, and subjected to other forms of harm.
In some cases, the perpetrators contact the victim’s family or friends to demand ransom, threatening severe injury or even death if payment is not made for the victim’s release.
The crimes committed by these individuals and groups typically include robbery, assault, assault and battery, threats of harm or death, non-consensual capture and distribution of intimate images, kidnapping, and violations of the right to dignity, among others.
