Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga: NDC Won’t Run Away from Anti-LGBTQ Bill Like NPP Did

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has firmly reassured Ghanaians that the NDC government remains fully committed to reintroducing and passing the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (anti-LGBTQ bill), insisting the party will not “run away” from the legislation the way the previous NPP administration did.

Speaking on Friday, November 21, 2025, Ayariga’s strong statement comes just days after President John Dramani Mahama personally assured the Christian Council of Ghana that he will sign the bill into law immediately once Parliament passes it.

The Majority Leader directly hit back at NPP Deputy Education Minister John Ntim Fordjour, who had accused the current government of frustrating the bill’s passage.

“Where was this energy and passion during the Akufo-Addo era?” Ayariga fired, pointing out that the NPP failed to muster the same urgency when they were in power and the bill sat idle for years.

With the President’s pledge to the Christian Council still ringing, Ayariga’s remarks have intensified the political battle lines, positioning the NDC as the party ready to finally deliver the controversial legislation the NPP repeatedly sidestepped.
