Ghana’s opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will hold a press conference on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at its headquarters in Asylum Down to address the ongoing debate around the Anti-LGBTQ Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025.
The press conference will be led by John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, and is themed: “The Hypocrisy and Double Standards of the NDC on LGBTQ+.”
The NPP has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing it of shifting its stance and showing inaction on the bill. According to the NPP, the NDC, while in opposition, used the Anti-LGBTQ bill as a major campaign issue during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, but has since failed to prioritise it in government.
The upcoming press conference is also expected to serve as the party’s official response to recent comments by President John Dramani Mahama, who said the bill is not the most pressing issue facing Ghana.
The President had explained that his government is currently focused on urgent national needs such as jobs, healthcare, education, food, clothing, and shelter, while the bill remains under consideration by the Parliament of Ghana.
The development shows how the LGBTQ+ issue is increasingly becoming a political talking point between the two main parties, raising concerns that it is being used more for political advantage than for careful policy discussion.
